Paper 3: A Study of Islam

Paper 1: Religious, Philosophical and Ethical Studies in the Modern World

In this paper, you will be expected to show excellent knowledge and understanding of the following components;

  • Issues of Relationships
  • Issues of Life and Death
  • Issues of Good and Evil
  • Issues of Human Rights

Each unit should take you 30 minutes and will consist of four questions worth 2, 5, 8 and 15 marks respectively. In this paper you will be given SPaG marks (6) based only on your answer to question 1D (Issues of Relationships). You will be expected to apply your knowledge of Christian and Muslim beliefs to issues such as divorce, abortion, capital punishment and racial discrimination. The quotes you have learnt from Paper 2 and Paper 3 can also be used here if they are explained effectively.

Paper 2: A Study of Christianity

In this paper, you will be expected to show excellent knowledge and understanding of the following components;

  • Christian beliefs and teachings
  • Christian practices

As with Paper 1, each unit should take you 30 minutes and will consist of four questions worth 2, 5, 8 and 15 marks respectively. You will be expected to know about Christian beliefs such as creation, the Trinity, the incarnation, the crucifixion and the resurrection. You will also be expected to show understanding of sacraments, prayer, worship, pilgrimage and festivals. You may be asked questions about the current status of Christianity in Great Britain or about the treatment of Christians in other countries.

Paper 3: A Study of Islam

In this paper, you will be expected to show excellent knowledge and understanding of the following components;

  • Muslim beliefs and teachings
  • Muslim practices
  • As with Paper 1, each unit should take you 30 minutes and will consist of four questions worth 2, 5, 8 and 15 marks respectively. You will be expected to know about Muslim beliefs such as tahwid, angels, prophethood (risalah), holy books and pre-destination. You will also be expected to show an understanding of the five pillars (fasting, prayer, zakat, hajj, shahadah), jihad and festivals. You may be asked questions which require knowledge about both Sunni and Shia Islam.
