At Mossley Hollins, our library sits at the very heart of our school life. Reading for pleasure is a vital part of your learning journey, and many of you are already enjoying diving into your favourite stories. Regular reading not only sparks your imagination but also strengthens your spelling, grammar, and punctuation—skills that support success across every subject, as all lessons involve reading and using subject-specific vocabulary.
Our library boasts a rich and up-to-date collection of fiction and non-fiction books across a wide range of genres. We have carefully curated a diverse selection to ensure there is something for every student, no matter your age or interests. The most important thing is to choose books that excite and interest you. Whether you are into fantasy, mystery, adventure, or real-life stories, we are here to help you find something you will love.
As you progress through school, our library will be here to support you every step of the way. Mrs Taylor, our librarian, and our fantastic team of student librarians are always on hand to help you find your next great read. We also welcome your suggestions—if there is a book you would love to see in the library, let us know!
Library Opening Hours:
The Library is open to all students before school from 8.00am, during breaks and lunchtimes, and after school until 4.00pm.
How We Support Reading for Pleasure
Our library is far from boring! We have a packed literacy calendar designed to excite and inspire our students. Here is a taste of what is on offer:
Book Buzz: In collaboration with BookTrust, every Year 7 student receives a free book to take home and keep. It is a brilliant way to kick-start your reading journey.
Author Visit: Our Patron of Reading, bestselling US author Christina Wyman, joins us from Michigan for a special book talk and Q&A session. It is a fantastic opportunity to hear directly from a real author!
Book Tasting Bistro: As part of your library induction lessons, year 7 take part in our Book Tasting Bistro. You will explore a variety of books, learn how the library works, and discover the exciting events we run throughout the year.
Creative Displays: Our library features fun and inviting displays that showcase authors, genres, new books, and current literacy promotions. There is always something new to discover!
The Book Fairy: Did you know Mossley Hollins has its very own Book Fairy? Each week, she visits student lockers and leaves behind the magical gift of a book. Will you be visited this week?
Academic Reading Challenges
Take part in our Classic or academic reading challenge. These are designed to stretch your thinking, build your vocabulary, and discover timeless stories that have shaped literature. From Dickens to Doyle, Austen to Orwell—can you complete the challenge and earn a reading badge for your blazer. Become a reading champion or a reading ambassador with these prestigous badges.
Model reading: Let your child see you reading—books, newspapers, or magazines. It shows that reading is valuable.
Talk about books: Ask open-ended questions like “What’s happening in your story?” or “What do you think will happen next?”
Create a reading-friendly home: Keep books visible and accessible in different rooms.
Celebrate reading milestones: Praise your child when they finish a book or reach a goal—maybe even with a small reward.
Limit distractions: Encourage reading time without phones, TV, or loud background noise.
Be patient and encouraging: If your child struggles, offer support without pressure. Reading confidence grows over time.
Explore shared reading: Read the same book as your child and discuss it together—it builds connection and comprehension.
Use tech wisely: Support reading apps or eBooks if your child enjoys digital formats.

We are thrilled to introduce Michigan author Christina Wyman, the USA Today bestselling author of the middle grade novels Jawbreaker and Slouch, as our school’s first Patron of Reading! This is a wonderful opportunity for our students and school community.

She expressed her excitement about becoming our Patron of Reading by saying, “It is such an honour to be Mossley Hollins High School’s first Patron of Reading. To be given the opportunity to help foster a love and joy of reading and promoting books within your school community, reading is a human right, and it is my privilege to be able to serve in this role.
We don’t have anything like Patron of Reading in the United States, and this is absolutely delightful for me.
We invite you to consider supporting our library by making a donation of a book from our Amazon Library Wishlist. Your contribution will directly impact our students’ educational experience and promote literacy within our community. We would really appreciate any support no matter how small to help students have a fabulous literary experience. Amazon wish list link
